About the Discovery Zoo
With a larger new living space, River Otters Shiloh and Sushi will splash their way through days lit with natural light, while Madison the Bobcat will enjoy viewing visitors from perches high in her new room. With views from above – and special windows below – five Meerkats will create their own community in the zoo, providing an up-close look at these squirrel-sized mongooses that are known for their upright posture.
The Nocturnal Area, featuring animals that are active at night and sleep during the day, includes species from three continents. With origins in Central and South America, Kinkajous Mya and Inca live across the hall from two North American Striped Skunks and fifteen Egyptian Fruit Bats.
In the Songbird Aviary, a Cedar Waxwing, Northern Cardinal, Grey Catbird, Red Bellied Woodpecker and Baltimore Oriole will join long-time zoo residents Beeper the Canada Goose, Lucky the Wood Duck and Hooded Mergansers to serenade visitors as they wander the path through the Zoo.
With tree branches for perches, Luna the Burrowing Owl offers a first-hand look at these unique birds of prey that build their nests in underground burrows and walk, hop, and run along the ground. Luna will be joined in this space by Houdini the Eastern Screech Owl, a favorite of visitors for years.
In the Rainforest exhibit, two Prehensile Tailed Porcupines share space with two Red Rumped Agoutis and a Cattle Egret. A separate space will feature other rainforest residents: Ornate and Red-flanked Lorikeets, with their colorful plumage and friendly personalities.
Exhibit spaces also include various amphibian and reptile exhibits that feature a Baker’s Spiny-tailed Iguana, a Veiled Iguana, an Emerald Tree Boa, and Poison Dart Frogs, as well as aquariums with a Dragon Moray Eel and a Spotted Gar.
