Jr. Scientist STEM Camps

Do you have an early elementary, kindergarten or preschool aged child who has a natural affinity for science and nature? Indulge their curiosity in our all new Jr. Scientist STEM Camps! For children ages 4 and 5, there are afternoon half-day camps, and for those a little older at 6 and 7, full day camps are offered.  
Ages 4 and 5: half day, 12:30pm-3:30pm: non-member$125/member$120
Ages 6 and 7:
full day, 8:30am-3:30pm: non-member$199/member$189

STEM Camps

Who knows STEM better than the Boonshoft? It’s our mission! From Astronomy to Zoology, your 8 to 11 year old will see the STEM in every discipline!

STEM Adventures

For campers who are ready for advanced opportunities in STEM, these new STEM Adventures are the way to go! Designed for slightly older and advanced campers, these camps include advanced materials or day trips to enhance the area of STEM they are interested in the most.
Ages 10 – 14: full day, 8:30am-3:30pm: non-member$350/member$340

STEM Adventure camps with overnight experiences out of town! Topics will include Zoo Keeping, Astronomy and Geology. Full descriptions, pricing, and field trip locations to be released January 2021.

To qualify for the next level of STEM Adventures, campers will be required to have participated in a Summer 2020 STEM Adventure.

After Camp Care

For families who need some extra time for pick up at the end of the work day, the Boonshoft Museum will have extended care available between 3:30pm and 5:30pm. Pre-registration is required.
$50 per week (members)
$75 per week (non-members)
$20 per hour for non-registered, late pick-ups. Late pick-up starts promptly at 3:45pm


ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Please plan to provide your camper(s) with a peanut-free bagged lunch. Microwaves and refrigerators are not available, so please do not pack lunches that require heating, and pack perishable items with an ice pack.

The maximum attendance per camp is 20 students; minimum attendance per camp is 8.

All registrations for summer camps at the Boonshoft Museum are considered final and no refunds will be issued.
You may transfer your camper to a different camp for an additional $25 administrative fee. No transfers are permitted once your camp begins.
We reserve the right to cancel a program for any reason, but will issue a full refund in the event this occurs. You will be notified no later than the Friday before your camp begins.
STEM Camps at The Boonshoft Museum and SunWatch Indian Village are peanut free.

Time to put your creature suits on, Kratts Kids!  Earn your creature disks as we will travel through different animal habitats from around the globe and explore the animals that live there.  But watch out!  We may have to save a few animals on our adventures!  During this camp we will learn about animals from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery’s Discovery Zoo and so much more! Dress as your favorite animal on Friday for a creature adventure! New animals and adventure for 2020!

You are invited to the Wonderful World of Boonshoft! Let your imagination soar while we imagine, create, and explore the world of science through the eyes of many of your favorite animated characters. 

STEM Camp: Be a Museum Adventurer

This week long camp will introduce your child to the fun of tabletop role-playing games. Students will use their imagination, math and logic, and social skills to adopt a unique persona and solve a mystery with new-found friends.

June 8 - 12

How does STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) get even better? By adding in Art! Campers will question, experiment, and create, allowing your Junior Scientist to nourish their natural curiosity in the world around them while expressing their creativity.

Grab your cloak and get ready for a scientific journey through the world of wizards, witches, and magic! Explore potions (chemistry), care for animals (zoo keeping), make wands (engineering), duel (logic), and learn astronomy. This will be a magical week with a STEM twist!

STEM Camp: Zookeeping 101

Are you dreaming of a future career as a Zoo Keeper? This newly expanded full day experience includes special opportunities like dissection and behavioral observations.  Campers will also learn about general biology, nutrition, medicine, behavioral training, and exhibit design. The best part: each camper receives hands-on opportunities with the animals!

STEM Adventure: Experimental Archaeology (SunWatch)
8:30am – 3:30pm
Ages 10 – 14
20 student maximum
Non Members: $300 per week

Join a real archaeologist at SunWatch Indian Village to explore and identify insects, plants, and mammals—both modern and prehistoric! Explore the Fort Ancient culture in prehistoric Ohio by experimenting with the theories of what it would be like to live in the Miami Valley 800 years ago.  Learn to make stone tools, play games from long ago, and how to build a house from wood, thatch and daub.

ATTENTION: Campers will spend a great deal of time outside and should be dressed accordingly; guidelines will be provided. There are no trips off site in this experience.

June 15 - 19

Jr. Scientists: Backyard Explorer

Nature has a lot of secrets—let’s grab our magnifying glasses and figure them out!  Explore the creatures of the pond, critters that fly, the world beneath our feet, and the slimiest stuff around. Young learners will earn a different patch each day!

Do you have a camper who’s crazy for LEGO or other building blocks? This camp will let your child tackle a variety of missions where LEGO + ingenuity is the recipe for success! From exploring animal habits, to building the perfect city, to engineering challenges, your camper will never look at LEGOs the same again!

STEM Camp: First Kid on the Moon
8:30am – 3:30pm

Learn about the challenges and triumphs involved with reaching and exploring the Moon with our Astronomy Team! Campers will learn how to navigate the stars from space in our planetarium, how to use telescopes to identify lunar features, and race to collect samples with robots. The week culminates in a simulated mission, a race to land the first kid on the Moon!

June 22-26

Do you want to fly like Superman? Shoot webs like Spider-Man? Call down lightning like Storm? Explore the powers of super heroes from our favorite movies and comic books with hands-on activities for our younger summer campers.

Is your child an engineer? Architect? Designer? Would they enjoy creating a miniature custom firehouse, dollhouse, or hospital? Get your STEAM skills ready to design and engineer materials for your very own tiny house. This camp will involve blueprints, furniture building, and lighting installation. Each child will take home an IKEA wooden house and STEAM crafted accessories on Friday.

STEM Camp: Chemistry Camp

The name says it all! If you have a camper who loves nothing more than mixing, observing and experimenting, this the camp for them! Campers will delight in reactions that ooze, fizz, and pop, and won’t get enough of the daily demonstrations in the Science Theater!

STEM Adventure: Zookeeping 201

Are you dreaming of a future career as a Zoo Keeper and have already taken Zoo Keeping 101? This is the next step in experiencing the many skills utilized by professionals in animal care.  Discover what wildlife rehabilitation is all about with a trip to Brukner Nature Center. Learn about animal conservation while visiting the Cincinnati Zoo’s Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (C.R.E.W.). All field trip expenses are included.

June 29 – July 3

Jr. Scientists: Think like a Scientist

Get ready to put on safety glasses and conduct incredible, wacky and fun experiments!  From magnets to simple machines and from nature studies to chemistry, there is something to interest every budding scientist.  Your camper will learn to predict outcomes, ask questions, and investigate answers through the hands-on science of chemical reactions, engineering and exploring nature!

Jr. Scientists: Get Your Geek On

Gamers, cosplayers, steampunkers, geeks, trekkies, and nerds unite! Join us for an entire week of gaming, superheroes, sci-fi, special effects, and fantasy. In this camp students will explore the science and math behind all their favorite areas of geekdom.

Every good scientist needs the ability to think creatively to solve problems - this is where the art comes into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). Campers will enjoy experimenting across several areas of STEM with a twist of artistic flare to ask questions, solve challenges, and learn how art and science work together!

July 6 – 10

Do you have a young camper interested in a career in animal care? Introduce them to the basics of the profession as they interact with a variety of animals found in the Boonshoft’s Discovery Zoo. Campers will learn more about natural habitats, special animal characteristics, and how the Discovery Zoo team cares for well over 100 different animals every day!

STEM Camp: First Kid on Mars
8:30am – 3:30pm

After the first astronauts visit Mars, eventually there will be a colony there. If you were going to live on Mars for the rest of your life, how would you prepare? What would you bring? What would you look forward to doing on Mars? Campers will learn about the special equipment and techniques needed on Mars, design their habitat there, and envision life on another planet!

STEM Adventure: Outdoor Explorer
20 student maximum

Join the Boonshoft for Field School! Campers will learn what it takes to be a field researcher by being immersed in data collection and observation using real scientific tools and techniques. Topics covered include: aquatic biology, ornithology, entomology, botany, archaeology, and herpetology. Daily trips to new locations will occur to allow campers to compare and contrast a variety of habitats and the life living in each.

ATTENTION: This camp runs rain or shine except in the event of extreme heat or lightning. Campers will be outside the majority of the day and should be dressed accordingly; guidelines will be provided. Three of the five days will be spent at locations not within walking distance of the Museum.

July 13 – 17

Jr. Scientists: Build, Create, Move

Do you like to design, build, and fix things? Then this camp is for you! Learn what makes buildings strong, who nature’s best engineers are, and how things move. Put your thinking cap on and get ready to learn how things work!

Jr. Scientists: Coasters, Cars, and Collisions

Learn the ins and outs of your favorite amusement park rides. Test your race car building skills! Push the limits of all your designs, set records, and build your own amusement park or racetrack while learning the physics and feats of engineering used to make these amazing rides and vehicles a reality.

Join us on a weeklong adventure as we travel straight to the Moon! More than fifty years after the original landing on the Moon, you will learn the science of how the first astronauts were able to make the trip.  You will explore the stars, learn what it takes to be an astronaut, and ultimately step foot on the Moon.

Did you know many of your favorite Pokémon characters are based on science?  Everyday take a look at two of your favorite Pokémon characters from the Red/Blue/Yellow series such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Pikachu.  At the end of camp create your very own Pokémon to show off to your friends and family.  It will be a shocking good time!

STEM Camp: Your Turn! The Board Game Camp
8:30am – 3:30pm

In this camp students will learn the different styles of board games.  It takes math, logic, and clever strategy to design the best board game. By the end of the week students will have built their own board game to take home!

STEM Adventure: Urban Astronomy
20 student maximum

Is your child interested in astronomy, but you live in the city? It turns out that there are plenty of ways to observe the sky despite light pollution. We will explore observing targets for both naked eye and binoculars: planets and the moon; bright stars and constellations; atmospheric phenomena like rainbows and sundogs; artificial satellites; and double stars and star clusters. The camp concludes with a stargazing overnight experience at SunWatch Indian Village. There is so much to see, once you know what to look for!

Attention: This camp runs Wednesday, July 22 to Saturday, July 25. Wednesday and Thursday are normal 8:30am to 3:30pm hours. Drop off on Friday is at 8:30am, and campers will be transported to SunWatch Indian Village in the afternoon for the overnight experience. Pickup will be at 8:30am on Saturday, July 25 at SunWatch Indian Village, located at 2301 W. River Road Dayton, OH 45417. Details about overnight items will be sent following registration.

July 27 – 31

Jr. Scientists: Dinosaur Discovery

Take a prehistoric adventure in Dinosaur Discovery! Campers open the portal to the past, as they travel to ancient worlds to learn about dinosaurs and other creatures that once inhabited the Earth.  Jr. Explorers make their own fossils and come face-to-face with the great beasts that long ago ruled the planet.

You are the next generation tasked with saving the world! Learn about modern problems like plastic in our oceans, air pollution, and climate change. Explore potential solutions to these problems and brainstorm ways to save our world.
