Zoo updates

April 12, 2010

Heather Ray, Assistant Curator of Live Animals at the Boonshoft Museum went to visit Shiloh and Sushi on the first day of spring, at the Good Zoo in Oglebay Park, WV. The River Otters are having a blast in the outdoor exhibit space that they share with the Good Zoo’s Rover Otters, Paso and Katori! Shiloh is still a little shy around people and keeps his distance, but one of Sushi's favorite things to do these days is chew on shoes. Most of the time, the two boys hang out alone in the exhibit, but occasionally, one of the girl otters gets to join them. Click here to view a quick video clip of the visit on our Facebook page, as well as a longer video tour of the Zoo - pre-renovation! - with Mark Mazzei, Curator, Live Animals.

The latest update on Shiloh and Sushi from Susan McCardle, Head Keeper at The Good Zoo in West Virginia: “We let the boys out today! Ahhh…it was glorious! Sushi has SO MUCH energy and was everywhere and anywhere! Shiloh took a bit to warm up to the exhibit but they have been swimming and exploring since about 1:00. We have a light layer of snow on the ground and they keep rubbing their noses in it and walking around with milk mustaches. Sushi keeps wanting to “otter play” with us so he will soon have to be trained some boundaries. The cold water and cold air don’t seem to bother them one little bit. They both are going in and out of the tubes too when called, so we don’t think that there will be any issues bringing them in tonight. We love them!”

January 12, 2010

It’s been almost a week since Shiloh & Sushi proved that they have what it takes to become experienced travelers, as they made their way to The Good Zoo at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV. They left the Boonshoft at about 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6 for the 200+ mile drive to their temporary home. In spite of the fact that they are not used to being in crates and riding in a van, they made the journey without incident. On arrival, they were transported to the otter enclosure at the zoo and quickly realized that they had new neighbors in the form of Paso and Katori – The Good Zoo’s female River otters. They quickly explored their new space, rearranging its contents in their own personal style – including putting the tin tub in the water and trying to go directly into the main (outdoor) River otter exhibit space.

The staff at The Good Zoo got the low-down on care and feeding from Shiloh & Sushi’s friends, Mark Mazzei, Curator of Live Animals, and Heather Ray, Assistant Curator of Live Animals at the Boonshoft. Rest assured that Shiloh & Sushi will each get their allotted otter patty and a share of smelt and sardines each day!

Shiloh & Sushi

In accordance with Association of Zoos & Aquariums standards, Shiloh and Sushi will remain in “quarantine” for 30 days to ensure the safety of all the animals. At the end of this time, they will get to alternate their time indoors and out with “the girls” as they can play in the outdoor viewing area of the exhibit.
